During
the workshops in Berlin many "cultural vehicles"
were used: writing and performing theatre etudes, reading
prose and poetry, going to an exhibition on humor in
art, viewing a puppet theatre production. The arts-based
activities helped especially those participants who
were not used to debating in an academic, theoretical
way. Some of them, who had refused to do any performing
at the beginning of the course, eventually found great
pleasure in acting and telling stories. Among other
things, they learned that it can be helpful to articulate
one's fears publicly ("I am stressed/ nervous") and
that it is by no means "embarrassing". They performed
with immense enthusiasm, showing a real talent and
a capacity to show sympathy for other characters. Working
on a given topic in teams was a new experience for
a lot of people and helped them in organizing their
learning process. Some participants attended nearly
all workshops and gained a new perspectives on their
lives.
